Utrecht Geologists Association

The U.G.V. song:

(wijze: Klokke Roelandt)

the U.G.V. established in 1946. This was in honor of the first N.G.M.S.O. congress (Dutch Geological and Mining Student Organization). Leiden and Delft already had an organization for students of geology and mining engineering, but there was none yet in Utrecht. According to Mr van der Sijp, Honorary Member of the U.G.V., the U.G.V. at that time a “somewhat loosely structured social club”. The contribution was 3.00 guilder per person per year.

Over the years, the U.G.V. and its traditions have continued to grow. In 1951, for example, the first Sinte Barbara party was organized. Saint Barbara is the patroness of the dangerous professions, including miners and geologists. Traditionally, the party is preceded by a shared meal. This kale meal once ended in a big throwing and throwing party, with the tables present serving as a barricade. After the dinner, the Barbara feast is still celebrated every year around December 4, the official date for the Barbara celebration.

Another tradition that has developed over the years is, for example, the rowing trip by the first-year students during the introduction week. Originally, during that rowing trip they had to go through a true hazing period that many Utrecht residents still remember with a grin: here too, the geologists turned out not to shy away from the better throwing and smashing with nutritious or rotting foodstuffs.

At the last general meeting of the U.G.V. in café Jan de Winter it has been decided to merge with Drift ’66 from the academic year 2012-2013.
